Ella Fairmont, as the anonymous Miss Prattle, has taken the Duke of Clare to task regularly in her gossip column. The duke, unsuspecting, includes Ella and her aunt in his week-long country houseparty. He has also included the blue-blooded Lady Honor, the strikingly beautiful Miss Sheridan, and the multi-talented Miss Prentiss. How could one “ordinary” young lady with a sharp tongue compete with three sterling debutantes? Regency Romance by Joan Smith; originally published by Fawcett

Escapade edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks

I almost gave up on this book. If a book doesn't "grab" me by the first quarter mark, I'll drop that book and move on to another read. Too many good books to waste my time reading ones I don't enjoy. But I like Joan Smith. Her books have given me many hours of entertainment. I especially enjoy her sense of humor. So I stuck with this one a little bit longer.

Sure enough, about a third of the way through, all of the characters are attending a very dull house party, when the heroine come to life and suggests a frog race. The book took off from there.

Nothing deep about this book . It is a light entertaining read. Ms. Smith has a gift for creating characters who can be ridiculous but quite funny. Humor is subjective, but I think you will enjoy this book if you can make it through the slow beginning. This book probably only deserves 3.5 stars, but I like Joan Smith. She makes me smile and laugh.

Escapade edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks Reviews

One of Joan Smith's best efforts. A funny, lively romp of a house party. Spunky heroine. Suave hero. Great secondary characters. And a good description of how the ton led a life of leisure with pastimes such as frog races. Highly recommend
This was a lovely read, with entertaining characters and dialog. Every now and then, however, strange errors in titles popped up. Perhaps it was simply the version. From time to time, our heroine's grandmother, Lady Watley, was referred to as Mrs. Watley. Here and there, the Duke of Clare was referred to as "my lord" or Lord Clare. Distracting but not fatal to an otherwise fun book. Miss Prattle....Lady Whistledown?
I struggled to get through this book. To me it took too long in the beginning for them to even meet and there wasn't enough romance. I didn't like the Duke either at first but he did grow on me. He didn't seem to like her at first and then all of a sudden he did. It just seemed a bit far fetched to me how quickly he came to like her and then suddenly he wanted to marry her! Although once the book warmed up it did flow fairly well but I was disappointed I really wanted to love this book.
4 Stars - Joan Smith is an old favorite of mine and I read this when I was in my late teens. Reading it now, it may seem like it's a decent book with fun characters and humor but don't expect sexual tension and graphic descriptions like you read currently. Maybe it's the nostalgic emotions that keeps this story close to my heart.
I read a lot of regency novels, it all started a very long time ago with Georgette, and dare I put her in the same sentence, Jane. I only recently discovered, thanks to , that there is a world of regency novels out there, some very good, some silly and the language unbearable contrived, but Joan Smith, for the most part, has evaded my criticisms and this novel is one I enjoyed more than any other. The mood was right, the characters, plot and chemistry worked well, it might join the very few I bother to read more than once, particularly on a cold winter's night when a light well written novel works like a hot chocolate drink!
Such an adorable regency! I enjoyed the heroine being a sublimely ordinary girl whose intellect was very believable. She was neither brazen in her wit nor ridiculously over-read. I loved that she only knew passable French but wanted to at least look at Russian. The gossip column is a bit of a trope but it was well-done in this case although I almost don't believe Clare's recovery at the end. I would have loved a final column from Miss Prattle on the ball at Almack's and naturally there was want of an epilogue as always but altogether it was most inspired. Clare was delicious as a hero but I would have enjoyed a bit more insight to why he fell for Ella, and so quickly. I loved and hated Sara. I loved her in Every scene except the ones she shared with Clare, I hated her during those. I enjoyed the swains and enjoyed hating the debs fighting for Clare's favor. The last minute house-party was excellent. I especially enjoyed Ella's diversions, the frog race was absolutely hysterical. Truly a wonderful story. Highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
I don't understand the few bad reviews, except they must enjoy the same old insipid recency plots out there by every author and Austen wannabe.

Though the plot could have taken a turn for the worse with the normal hero and heroine hating each other, then taking in love, it managed to stay fresh and new by displaying a brand of cleverness and wit not often available in regency books. Is she Jane Austen? Of course not, but it's refreshing that she doesn't try to be. I like that this author let the female characters show their claws... despite weak insults disguised as every day chats that many regency characters display, people were the same then add now.... petty, envious and downright witchy when it came to competition.

I thought this book was fun, clever and highly enjoyable (though a bit slow at first) while I did find it a bit hard to believe the heroine could go from a wallflower to the live of the party,I find that is often true in real life as well as we grow, mature, and develop our own personalities as we become adults and more confident in who were are. We also change some when we meet that right person who draws us out.

My only complaint is some problems with editing.. but overall a highly enjoyable, light, funny read that literally had me laughing out loud in some parts. Especially towards the end in the conversations between the duke and his mother. )
